Nano Banana 2 vs GPT Image 2: Current Costs, Inputs and Limits

On PromptToVisual, choose Nano Banana 2.1 when you need two reference images; consider GPT Image 2 for a text prompt or one-reference edit at a lower credit cost. The current costs are 6 and 5 credits per image respectively. Both are generative workflows, so text, identity and surrounding details need inspection.

Checked October 28, 2026. This is a comparison of the current PromptToVisual settings, written by the operator. “Nano Banana 2” in the question refers to the model family; the active model here is 2.1. Our older Nano Banana 2 page retains its historical sample. GPT Image 2 and GPT Image 2.5 are also separate versions.

When does Nano Banana make sense?

Use the two-reference path when the relationship between two sources is the task: two adults in a generated group photo, or a product with a separately prepared background. Name the role of each reference and ask for one finished scene. The published group-photo workflow and pixel-art example show actual Nano Banana 2.1 outputs and their observed limits.

These examples do not establish a head-to-head advantage over GPT Image 2. They use different tasks and inputs. Faces, labels and proportions can be redrawn; use the source images to check the result.

When does GPT Image 2 make sense?

Consider the 5-credit option when one reference or a text-only prompt is enough. Its model page includes the retained product example and the settings used. If your job is changing poster text, the default editor instead uses Qwen Image 3 Pro at 4 credits; selecting a model name from a comparison is not required for every edit.

For later versions, see the separate Flare and Sunburst pages. Their samples and 6-credit cost do not describe GPT Image 2.

Which costs less for a small job?

Ten completed GPT Image 2 images use 50 credits; ten Nano Banana 2.1 images use 60. That is a calculation from the current 5- and 6-credit rates, assuming one attempt per image. It does not predict the number of attempts needed to reach an acceptable result. A technically completed result still uses credits even if you dislike it.

The one-time pack costs US$9.99 for 100 paid credits. At the current rates, 16 Nano Banana images use 96 credits, while 20 GPT Image 2 images use 100. These counts assume one attempt per image and no other use of the pack; subscription pricing and quotas are separate.

Can I try either for free?

The ordinary PromptToVisual trial provides 4 credits, which is below either model’s price. It can cover one 4-credit Qwen image or up to two 2-credit Z-Image drafts, subject to the trial limits. Google’s Gemini image page separately describes its own free Nano Banana access and paid-plan access to 2.1. ChatGPT’s Free plan lists limited image creation; that does not promise access to a specific legacy model or to this site’s credits.

Inspect two published examples

These retained PromptToVisual results use different briefs and inputs. They illustrate two workflows; they do not establish which model produces better images.

What this comparison has not tested

No new same-prompt, same-source Nano Banana 2.1 versus GPT Image 2 experiment was run for this article. We do not rank face preservation, text accuracy, speed or overall quality between them. The useful differences established here are the current inputs, output dimensions, costs and available workflows.

Before a new comparison, choose one permitted input and define acceptable spelling, identity and layout. Keep every result and count all attempts. Use Image Compare to inspect changes without spending generation credits.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for text rendering?

This article has not tested the two models with the same prompt and input, so it does not name a text-rendering winner. Check every word in the generated result. The separate Qwen poster workflow includes a published example you can inspect.

Which is cheaper on PromptToVisual?

GPT Image 2 uses 5 credits per completed image; Nano Banana 2.1 uses 6. Ten completed attempts cost 50 and 60 credits respectively. The number of attempts needed for an acceptable result has not been compared.

Can both edit an existing image?

Yes. The current GPT Image 2 workflow accepts up to one reference, while Nano Banana 2.1 accepts up to two. Both produce generated flat images and may change details beyond the requested edit.

Can I try both for free?

The ordinary PromptToVisual trial has 4 credits, below either model’s cost. It cannot cover one GPT Image 2 or Nano Banana 2.1 generation. Free access advertised by other apps has separate account, version and quota conditions.
