Best AI Image Generators in 2026: Choose by Task and Free Limits

Choose a workflow before choosing a winner. Start with ChatGPT for conversational image creation, Gemini for the Nano Banana family, or Firefly for Adobe’s creative workspace. Consider PromptToVisual when you want to choose among its listed models and see a credit cost before submitting. Free access is limited; the same model name can have different controls and quotas in different apps.

Written by PromptToVisual, which is included below. This is a source-based shortlist checked on October 28, 2026, not a paid-placement ranking or a new head-to-head image-quality benchmark. External app features come from the linked official pages; our examples show only the named model and task.

First compare platforms: where will you work?

A platform supplies the account, interface, prices and limits. A model generates or edits the image inside that platform. ChatGPT and Gemini are platforms; GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana 2.1 are model versions. Do not treat a platform’s free allowance as free access to every model.

Higher-cost models need extra credits; subscriptions are separate.

These choices describe workflow fit, not measured quality superiority. Check the provider’s page before subscribing; account, country and plan conditions can change.

Then compare models within the same platform

These five options are available in PromptToVisual’s existing studio. Prices below are this site’s credits, not the model providers’ API prices. All five offer a 1024 × 1024 square output; other dimensions and reference limits depend on the model.

FLUX 3 Image is square text-to-image only in this release. See all current model options and retained samples. Text rendering is not scored in this table. Commercial use requires applicable input rights and provider terms for every option; a credit purchase does not grant blanket clearance.

Which option is best if I want to spend nothing?

Try a current free allowance with a small, non-sensitive brief before buying a subscription. ChatGPT, Gemini and Firefly describe free access on their official pages above, with different limits. A free plan does not establish access to every model, maximum resolution or unlimited exports.

On PromptToVisual, the ordinary trial is one per person and browser, expires after 30 days and can be limited by shared-network usage or the daily free budget. Preparing a prompt does not spend credits. The current GPT Image 2 generation costs 5 credits and Nano Banana 2.1 costs 6, so the ordinary 4-credit trial cannot cover either. See credit costs and trial conditions.

Choose by the change you need

New artwork from a description

Start with a clear subject, composition and output shape. If you are using PromptToVisual, Z-Image Turbo costs 2 credits per image and accepts text only; it cannot edit a reference photograph. That makes it a lower-credit way to explore a brief, not a substitute for reference editing.

A small edit to an existing image

Check reference support and inspect unchanged areas as well as the requested change. Our poster editor prepares a Qwen Image 3 Pro edit for 4 credits. Its published poster example includes the source and actual output. Generated text and surrounding graphics can change; a flat download does not contain editable text layers.

Two people or objects in one generated scene

Our two-reference composition workflow uses Nano Banana 2.1 for 6 credits. The two-person example shows a narrow accepted case and its limitations. This is different from placing unchanged photos next to each other.

Crop, layout or an exact caption

Use a deterministic tool when it already does the job. Our crop, stitch and text overlay tools work locally without an account or generation credits. They preserve a straightforward editing workflow without asking a model to redraw the scene.

Inspect two published examples

These retained PromptToVisual results use different briefs and inputs. They illustrate two workflows; they do not establish which model produces better images.

How to compare without wasting attempts

  1. Write down what must be correct: spelling, product count, recognizable person, framing or output size.
  2. Use the same permitted source, prompt and comparable dimensions. Do not compare unrelated showcase thumbnails as a controlled test.
  3. Count every completed attempt and its cost. Review unwanted changes at full size.
  4. Choose from the actual results for your task. One attractive image does not establish a universal winner.

This article did not run new external generations. The examples linked here were already published, and their limits remain part of the evidence.

What about watermarks and commercial use?

Watermarks, provenance metadata and rights to use an image are separate questions. Check the exact export and the provider’s current terms. Use source material you have permission to upload and review faces, logos, text and other third-party material before publishing. A paid plan or a “commercial” use case is not by itself clearance for every image.

For this site, read PromptToVisual’s terms. If you need a guaranteed editable logo, exact product pixels, a cutout with transparency or AI upscaling, verify that specific output before choosing a generator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI image generator?

Start with a platform whose current free allowance covers your task. ChatGPT, Gemini and Firefly list limited free access. PromptToVisual offers 4 one-time trial credits subject to eligibility, enough for one default Qwen image or up to two Z-Image drafts. This article does not establish a universal quality winner.

Can I generate without signing up?

PromptToVisual requires a verified account and credits for AI generation. Its crop, stitch and text-overlay tools work without an account, but they do not generate a new image. Check other platforms’ current sign-in requirements on their official pages.

Which image model is best for text?

There is no controlled text-rendering winner in this article. The PromptToVisual poster editor uses Qwen Image 3 Pro and links to an actual text-edit result. Inspect spelling and layout in the finished image; no model selection guarantees exact text.

Can I use generated images commercially?

Check the terms of the platform and selected model, your rights to every input and any third-party rights in the result. Paying for a plan does not clear those rights. PromptToVisual does not provide blanket commercial clearance.

Should I choose GPT Image 2 or Nano Banana 2.1?

On PromptToVisual, GPT Image 2 costs 5 credits and accepts up to one reference; Nano Banana 2.1 costs 6 credits and accepts up to two. Choose by the inputs you need and the current quote. These differences do not establish a quality winner.
