Image Stitching vs AI Image Combining: Which Do You Need?

Choose between arranging unchanged photos and generating a new scene. Compare costs, editing limits and the right PromptToVisual workflow.

Start with the result you actually need

If your goal is to show two photographs next to each other, you need a layout tool. If your goal is to take an object from one photograph and place it inside the setting of another, you need a compositing or generative editing workflow. Both tasks are sometimes described as combining images, but they produce different results. Choosing the right operation matters more than choosing a model name. A simple layout should not require a paid generation, and a layout cannot by itself create a convincing new scene.

What image stitching does

Stitch Images puts two to four sources into a row, column or grid. Each source remains a separate picture fitted inside its cell. The operation may resize the source, but it does not ask a model to invent new objects, match a new lighting setup or move a person between photographs. This makes it useful for product angles, tutorial sequences, before-and-after pairs and visual collections. Review the reading order and spacing before exporting. Different source proportions can leave padding; that is a layout consequence, not a failed AI edit.

When a photo collage is the better layout

Photo Collage also arranges existing images, but it lets you choose a square, portrait or landscape canvas before choosing a grid, row or column. Use it when the overall output shape matters. The longest edge is sixteen hundred pixels, and every source fits fully inside its cell. A three-image grid leaves an empty cell. If that does not suit the composition, choose a row or column. Neither Collage nor Stitch removes a background, extracts a subject or creates a shared physical space between the objects in different cells.

What an AI combiner changes

An AI combiner uses the references as guidance to generate a new image. For example, one reference may show a product and another may show the table where you want it placed. The prompt explains the desired relationship. The result can include new shadows and a coherent setting, but it can also change product proportions, lettering, surfaces and background details. A good-looking result is not proof that every reference detail survived. Keep both originals and inspect the generated output at full size before using it in a listing or campaign.

Why cost differs

The local layout tools run in your browser without generation credits. The AI composition workflow uses Nano Banana 2 and follows its six-credit generation cost in the studio. Preparing the instructions does not spend credits; submitting a generation does. A technically completed image that you do not like is different from a failed job. Changing the prompt and generating again is a new paid attempt. This is why it is useful to decide whether you really need a new scene before selecting an AI workflow.

A concrete product example

Suppose you have front and rear photos of a bag. To show both views in one image, use Stitch or Collage. If you have a product photo and a separate studio background and want the bag placed in that studio, an AI composition is a plausible experiment. Check the straps, fasteners, silhouette and any label after generation. If the task requires the original product pixels to remain exact, a conventional layer-based editor with a carefully prepared cutout may be more suitable. Generative preservation instructions are not pixel locks.

How to compare the outputs fairly

For a layout, check photo order, output dimensions, cropping and padding. For a generated scene, check object count, identity cues, text, perspective, placement, shadows and unwanted additions. Those are different acceptance criteria. Our small synthetic-product test showed that a recognisable bottle could be placed in a new setting while the pedestal or other details still changed. That is evidence to inspect the whole composition, not a reason to assume either universal success or universal failure. Do not compare a thumbnail from one tool with a full-size output from another.

Privacy and editing later

Stitch and Collage process selected images locally. AI generation uploads the references when you submit them to the provider workflow. Keep that difference in mind when choosing inputs. Downloads from both paths are flat images, not editable project files. Reopening a collage does not restore its original cells, and reopening an AI result does not recover the separate reference layers. Save the sources and your instructions if you expect revisions. A browser draft is not a backup of your image files.
